Kick/Knife week..

Okay, some of you might be wondering what the two have in common. Well, there are times when your defense to a knife is a kick, to keep your opponent at bay, and sometimes, if you're lucky, to drop the opponent. This kind of thing requires angling to the opponent. This is something we'll go over in class.

There are several schools of thought on both kicking and knife handling, some as far apart as can be. The subject is complicated. For the most part, we are not in a system that promotes high kicking, a high kick is a risky move, if it gets caught you are at a distinct disadvantage. Sometimes it's just as easy to move on a high kick with a lower kick. If you are close enough to read the kick, you can block it with a very simple check, I am going to try to find either some pics or a video or something on this one, we'll do it tonight in class, it's pretty simple once you can read the kick coming.

Well, great so what does this have to do with defending against knives. Well, think about it, you may be trying to get some distance between yourself and the attacker, you will use your best long range weapon, the kick. The kick can serve to stun the attacker, affording you an opportunity. If the opportunity is to run, well, you may just have it, if the goal is more aggressive, it can serve as a could be just the kind of distraction to get in and disarm.

So I asked for socks only tonight (10.06.2010), so we can do some kicking, blocking and a little knife play.

  1. Okay folks, what have we learned about knife work, well, we've learned that the following principles apply Speed, Body movement, Diversion, Disarm, how did we learn this.

Well, it was fun, but I think all of us got shaved a little or stabbed, this is part of it, but we also learned that a simple kick or a simple slap down can keep us alive.

A little body movement, does a world of good. A kick can distance you from the attacker in a zone 1 through 4, some torso movement in zones 4 - 7 can really save your life.

Sure if you are cornered attempt a disarm, but you have to be fast and decisive. We have some footage on the optimal conditions, which is good, it shows us form and what can happen if we are living right. Our best strategy is still to get out of the way.

This was day 1 of knife play, stay tuned for day 2.
